I was recently lucky enough to go to Southwark Cathedral for a candlelight photography evening. It was so calm and peaceful, I almost didn’t want to disrupt it with my camera. I am not religious, but I do get a sense of total awe walking into a building as grand as this one and realising that people have worshiped on that spot for over 1,000 years. The building you see today was predominantly built between 1220 and 1420, though some earlier sections survive, and as with many historic buildings, it has been added to many times over the years.
One of my favourite things about Southwark is the view across the river, to the city and the skyscrapers, so of course after visiting the cathedral, I headed towards London Bridge to capture the lights. It is a particularly beautiful view since new lights were installed on the bridge by the Illuminated River project. I would definitely recommend taking a walk down the river one winter evening, and there are plenty of good pubs to warm up in!
